During July, Talent Search hosted 25 rising eighth- and ninth-graders. The program's focus was to address the summer melt and expose students to a variety of STEM-focused careers and hands-on activities. Over 20 campus partners provided meaningful experiences for our Talent Search students. Upward Bound completed our 2023 Summer Academy on July 28. Our first summer session ran from June 12 to June 30. During these three weeks, our students commuted to campus and participated in one or more afternoon classes – Engineering (web development for all), Intro to Pre-Calculus, Foreign Language (Spanish), Financial Literacy, and Reading (book club). Our second summer session ran from July 9 to July 28. During these three weeks, our students resided in the residential halls on campus. For our academic component, we continued offering Intro to Pre-Calculus; additionally, we added Science lab activities (Biological Science, Physics, and Biology), SAT test prep, and Biometrics Technology. We also offered workshops on a variety of topics, college tours, physical activities, and cultural activities. Our Summer Academy ended with a visit to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.
